Philadelphia Museum of Art

Plan B Engineering designed a Systems Access Scaffold and performed engineering for Mast Climbing Work Platforms at the Philadelphia Museum of Art for cleaning and repairing frescoes and masonry details. 

The scaffolds had a very stringent load requirement to allow a special laser-based cleaning technology and traditional masonry work, as well as providing material transport via external hoisting elevators. The base of the scaffold also posed challenges as it frequently loaded roofs or areaways and had to preserve access and egress. Of particular note was the main entrance, where the scaffold system had to permit the moving of art pieces in and out of the building for traveling exhibits. The mast climbers were supported on subterranean structures and required detailed tie analysis to ensure the safety of workers and the public as well as the integrity of the museum.
